JL4 Blackjack Dealer Rules: Card Values, Splits and the Draw
Blackjack dealer rules are fixed: the dealer draws or stands by the rule printed on the table.
- JL4 Lucky 9 Card Game
- To play Lucky 9, you get two cards and add them up.
- JL4 Cards
- To play Pusoy Dos, deal 13 cards to each of four players.
- JL4 Online Baccarat
- Online baccarat is a bet on which of two hands finishes closer to 9: Player, Banker or Tie.
- JL4 Pai Gow Poker
- In Pai Gow Poker you get seven cards and set them into a five-card high hand and a two-card low hand.
- JL4 Roulette Payout Chart by Bet Type
- Roulette payout is a fixed ratio per bet: straight up 35 to 1, split 17 to 1, street 11 to 1, corner 8 to 1, six line 5 to 1, column and dozen 2 to 1, and red or black, odd or even, high or low 1 to 1.
The blackjack dealer rules leave the dealer no choices, and they rest on card values that every other rule in the game builds on. This page puts the values in one table, then shows how splitting a pair and the dealer’s drawing rule use them. It belongs to our set of Filipino card games with a dealer, where blackjack sits beside baccarat and Pai Gow Poker.
Blackjack card values at a glance
| Card | Counts as | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2 to 10 | Face number | A 7 counts 7 |
| Jack, queen, king | 10 | All three count the same |
| Ace | 1 or 11 | Whichever helps the hand |
Your total is the sum of your cards. The goal is a total closer to 21 than the dealer’s, without going over. Going over 21 is a bust and loses the hand at once.
Soft and hard hands
An ace makes a hand soft or hard. The same two cards can behave very differently.
- Soft hand. An ace counts as 11. Ace and 6 make a soft 17, and one more card cannot bust you.
- Hard hand. No ace, or an ace forced to count as 1. A 10, a 6 and an ace make a hard 17.
- Switching. A soft hand turns hard when taking another card would put the 11 over 21.
Blackjack split: when a pair may be split
A blackjack split turns one pair into two separate hands. You place a second stake equal to the first, and each card becomes the start of its own hand. The dealer then plays the usual round against both.
| Your pair | Split? | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Two 8s | Yes, allowed | Splits a 16 into two hands that start at 8 |
| Two aces | Yes, allowed | Each ace can start at 11 |
| Two 5s | Allowed | Breaks up a hard 10 |
| King and queen | Table rule | Some tables treat all ten-value cards as a pair |
Whether split hands may be split again, doubled or played after an ace is also a table rule. Open the table’s info screen and read it before you put the second stake down.
Blackjack dealer rules: when the dealer draws or stands
The dealer has no choices. The table prints a fixed rule, and the dealer follows it on every hand. The usual shape is that the dealer draws on a low total and stands from a set total up.
- The dealer shows one card face up and takes the second after the players act.
- If the dealer’s total is under the table’s standing number, the dealer draws another card.
- At or above that number the dealer stands, and your total is compared.
- The standing number and how a soft 17 is treated are printed on the table.
Because the dealer’s play is fixed, your only decisions are your own: hit, stand, split or double, where the table allows them.

FAQ
What is an ace worth in blackjack?
An ace counts 11 when that keeps your total at 21 or under, and 1 when 11 would put you over. A hand that holds an ace counted as 11 is called a soft hand.
What is the difference between a soft and a hard hand?
A soft hand has an ace counted as 11, so one more card cannot bust it. A hard hand has no ace, or has an ace that must count as 1.
Can I split any two cards?
You may split a pair of cards of equal value, such as two 8s. Some tables also allow two different ten-value cards to split, such as a king and a queen. The table's info screen states which pairs it accepts.
