Most pages that use the word RTP take for granted that the reader already knows it. This one does not.

RTP comes from the way the game’s maths is built, not from any assurance about how a session goes. The design behind a 96% RTP is to return 96 units for every 100 wagered, measured across a very large number of spins, millions and not hundreds. The remaining 4 is the house edge. On most games, the casino offering it has no way to alter it, since the studio sets it when the game is built.

Using it in practice

RTP tells you something when two games are compared, but it says little when held up against your own results. A single point of RTP means something across a catalogue and nothing you could notice across a session. Look at where the number came from too: RTP on a studio’s own game pages is fair to quote, and the same number repeated across comparison sites lacking a primary source is not.

On this site’s game pages, RTP and related terms come up constantly; if a studio keeps the underlying figure to itself, the page simply states that and does not substitute a number copied from a comparison site. A number of the spec tables here have gaps, and that is the cause.

The common misreading

Reading a 96% RTP as 96% of a player’s money returned over an evening is the widespread error. It does not. Variance takes over in short sessions, with the long-run average appearing only over a volume of play out of any single player’s reach. Whether the figures are accurate is not something either outcome reveals: a whole stake can vanish on a 98% game while a 94% one leaves a player ahead.

A worked example

The arithmetic is worth doing once. Wagering ₱10 a spin for 500 spins on a 96% RTP slot totals ₱5,000; the expected return is ₱4,800, an expected loss of ₱200. There is a catch: a tiny sample like 500 spins scatters widely around that figure, and a high-volatility game scatters wider than that. A distribution’s centre is what the expectation represents, rather than a predicted result.

FAQ

What do people get wrong about RTP?

Reading a 96% RTP as 96% of a player's money returned over an evening is the widespread error. It does not. Is RTP something a casino can change?

Not on this site's evidence. If the game's own maths decides a value behind rtp, the studio owns that value and the operator does not, and when the studio withholds it, no third party is in a position to back up a figure.

What does RTP mean?
